Street Fighter V Gameplay Trailer: There's Something For Everyone

Chun-Li's work-in-progress match intro from Street Fighter V.

Okay, the obvious joke response to the post title is unfortunately "except for Xbox One owners." Let's look beyond that for a second.

Following up the lovingly crafted announcement trailer, Capcom released an extended glimpse at early gameplay from the upcoming Street Fighter V during this weekend's PlayStation Experience event. While there's still a lot of work to be done, the game already shows immense potential. There are glimpses of mechanics both new and old, and the speculation is already in full swing. Check out the video below!

The game is a continuation of the Street Fighter IV series' 2.5D style from a pure visual standpoint, with dramatic camera angles and cinematics thrown in where appropriate. Naturally, we're shown that plenty of classic special moves (such as Ryu's Hadoken and Chun-Li's Spinning Bird Kick) are also firmly in place. From there, it looks as if there could be more than one super combo available for each character, bringing Street Fighter III to mind. Guard Breaks ala Street Fighter EX (or the Alpha series' Guard Crush mechanic) may also be in place given a moment where Ryu dramatically knocks Chun-Li out of her block state.

Ryu's Denjin Hadoken returns from Street Fighter III.

Fans hoping for something new from the series are also in luck. Most obviously, it appears that stage transitions may be making their way to SFV. It's difficult to tell just how that works for now, but it's sure to add a dynamic new layer to each match. A moment where Chun-Li looks to power up in some way before firing off two Kikokens (her fireball special) may also be part of a new mechanic. Finally, we're shown a few sequences using possible launcher and air juggle features similar to those found in games like Marvel Vs. Capcom.

Despite the wide variety of highlighted features, perhaps saying Street Fighter V has something for everyone may be a bit optimistic. Some fans will be disappointed no matter what, but seeing such a strong balance between returning and new ideas this early on is incredibly promising. I'm really looking forward to how the game progresses from here.
