Evo 2014 Day 1 Ultra Street Fighter IV Tournament Full of Upsets

Battle of the blondes

The first day of Evo 2014 is now behind us, and among its highlights were a ton of exciting Ultra Street Fighter IV matches. Interestingly, many of the game's most well renown top players were eliminated earlier than most would have predicted. Examples include:

Momochi (Ken) eliminating Dieminion (Guile)

Sako (Ibuki) eliminating Gamerbee (Adon)

Eita (Player 1 Akuma) eliminating Infiltration (Player 2 Akuma) off-stream

John Choi (Ryu) eliminating Daigo Umehara (Evil Ryu) off-stream

Luffy (Rose) eliminating Mago (Fei Long) off-stream

High-profile players such as Justin Wong, PR Balrog, Kazunoko, Tokido, K-Brad, Haitani, Mike Ross, John Choi, Alex Valle, Ryan Hart, and Filipino Champ have also been eliminated from competition.

The confirmed top 8 players are Snake Eyez, Fuudo, Gackt, Bonchan, Luffy, Momochi, Ricky Ortiz, and Sako. Surprisingly, Fuudo is the only former Evo champion to make it in. While it's too bad that so many major players were eliminated before they were expected to, it's great to see the potential for a first time winner this year. It's going to be very interesting to see how the Ultra Street Fighter IV finals play out on Sunday. For those interested, the event will be streamed on Twitch via the SRKEvo1 channel around 6PM PDT.

That does it for now! Until next time, feel free to catch me on Twitter & Facebook!
