Ultron's Avengers: Age of Ultron Design Looks Solid

Yep, that's Ultron alright.

For the two of you that somehow missed it: Entertainment Weekly's upcoming issue is a San Diego Comic-Con Preview that features a striking Avengers: Age of Ultron cover, complete with our first official look at the film's Ultron design. You can check out the full cover image via EW's Twitter.

For me, this is another case of not expecting to see so much so soon, but I suppose it makes sense. SDCC 2014 is next week, and the movie itself is only 10 months away at this point. Where does the time go?

As far as reveals go, this feels like a big one. The cover manages to give the basic gist of the design, and I think it captures Ultron well. A big part of the character's comic history has been a constant string of upgrades, so landing on one defining look can be tricky. The following example doesn't even scratch the surface:

From Kurt Busiek and George Perez's Ultron Unlimited arc, as collected in Avengers Assemble Vol. 2

Given the frequent redesigns, it's easier to simply compile a list of required traits. The menacing faceplate is of the highest importance, and the Age of Ultron design has absolutely delivered. I'm sure some comic fans will be disappointed that it doesn't perfectly capture their favorite version — and even I would've preferred the vertically angled eyes — but I think a fresh take that pulls from various sources with its own "Marvel Cinematic Universe" appropriate sensibilities is ultimately for the best. It's also worth noting that the EW write-up makes reference of the character's penchant for rebuilding, so I imagine we might see a few other looks throughout the movie.

Either way, if what we've been shown here is anything to go by, I think Ultron is going to look fantastic on the big screen. Successful marketing is successful, Marvel. I'm starting to feel excited for Avengers: Age of Ultron in a big way.

And BTW, I really hope that "Domo Arigato" caption from the background is really on the final printed cover:

Someone get Tony Hale in here, stat!
