Number Ones - Uncanny Avengers #1 Review

Say it three times fast: Uncanny Avengers Volume 2 #1 - "Counter-Evolutionary Part 1!"

Uncanny Avengers #1 is the start of a new volume showcasing the Avengers Unity Division in the aftermath of the AXIS storyline. While there are certainly more than enough thrown at us, there's a part of me that will always dig seeing characters come together in high-profile team-ups. Let's dive into the issue and see what's in store!

Right from the start, writer Rick Remender does a fantastic job of remaining inclusive to readers who are either behind (as I often am) or in need of a quick refresher after AXIS' many shake-ups. He's excellent at pacing and letting the story flow naturally through a great balance of inner monologues and character banter. The issue opens up with an engrossing action scene starring Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch that sets the tone perfectly. Even with heavy developments taking place, this is a fun read.

The book takes a small breather as focus shifts to the core team. Each member has a well defined personality and ideals of their own. A two-page conversation between Captain America, Rogue, and Vision might sound boring on paper, but I loved seeing them try to get a handle on their objective and how to go about it. Sabretooth and Doctor Voodoo add even more depth to the overall dynamic. Everyone serves a purpose and the story advances quite nicely through the characters' conversations and actions.

Of course, Daniel Acuña's artwork gives the book some incredible eye-candy. He stays away from pages that are merely a series of rectangles as much as possible. It's not rare to come across panels that flow seamlessly into the next. His layouts have a real liveliness, as do the well-rendered characters that inhabit them. He and Remender make quite the team.

If you caught my review of the recent Star Wars #1, I mentioned loving stories that continuously throw curveballs at the protagonists. You know things are going to work out somehow, but seeing them have to rely on their wits and maybe even a little blind luck to overcome the insane situations they find themselves in can be fascinating. When it comes to high-stakes action stories with plenty of drama layered in, I want to care about what's going on and where it's all going. I want to find myself all too eager to turn to the next page, and feel as if I absolutely have to find out what happens in next month's issue. Thanks to its slick artwork and masterful writing, that's exactly where the new Uncanny Avengers #1 left me. I'm definitely on board for more.
