"Batman V Superman" Batsuit Reveal Shows More Than I Expected

Batman v Superman costume
I'm Batman or whatever.

On May 12th, 2014, Zack Snyder (director of movie films such as 300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, etc) tweeted a picture showing the back end of the new Batmobile from the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. As far as teasers go, it's what you'd expect. You could pretty much only make out some tires and the hint of a spoiler. However, the tweet ended with a promise to show more the next day. Surprisingly, what followed was actually a major reveal: the film's new Batsuit! Ooh. For the two of you who haven't seen it, behold:

And thus, the only thing the internet would talk about that day was decided.

The Man of Steel sequel isn't set to hit theaters until two years from now (May 6, 2016.) Despite how many people have been clamoring for a look at the batsuit, I never expected to see this much of it so soon. Most teasers of this nature are done up in silhouette save for a few little illuminated patches here and there. Here, you basically get an idea of the whole design aside from the boots. I really have to wonder what the thought process behind that decision was! Either way, it certainly has people talking.

As you would expect, the internet has been completely abuzz over the teaser images today. I've seen them re-posted over and over from every source imaginable. I find it much more interesting what people actually have to say however. Here are a few notable responses from the Twitter:

Before the Batsuit reveal, this LEGO Batman profile had some fun parodying the initial teaser in glorious LEGO brick form.

"Theperogiejedi" was impressed enough to offer up some praise.

Comic artist Bill Forster took the time to remind us that there may other important factors to keep in mind leading up to the movie's release.

While many are loving the huge DKR-inspired emblem, it wasn't gamer Miguel Lozada's cup of tea. Nothing is for everyone, and that's okay!

As for my take on it? I have to admit, the image didn't particularly excite me. I appreciate the attempt to take it into "comic accurate" territory, especially with its little nods to Frank Miller's artwork from The Dark Knight Returns, but I'm not sure if I really like it as of now. The texture does indeed look a bit odd and I'm not sure if I like how they handled defining the musculature. The armor plating on the Batsuits from the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy found a great way to achieve the "superhero" look while staying grounded. Regardless, the most important thing is how the new suit will look in motion on the big screen under proper lighting and cinematography. A little "movie magic" can go a long way.

Next up: the Batsuit reveal has inspired its fair share of memes and other lulz-tastic photos, and a compilation just might be in order. Internet: ya gotta love it!
