Can Transformers: Robots in Disguise Recapture the Magic of Animated?

Sideswipe, Bumblebee, and Fixit from Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015)

Courtesy of a recent Variety.com article, we know the next Transformers cartoon series will be a follow up to Prime titled Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Hmm, that sounds familiar.

Aside from the recycled name, the thing that strikes me most are some of the similarities to Transformers: Animated. First of all, the initial character models (shown above) almost seem to marry the Transformers: Prime aesthetic with that of Animated. The wheeled character "Fixit" might not be the quintessential "cool" battle-ready humanoid bot, but he looks like he would've fit right in milling about the background of Burger Bot.

There are going to be a lot of differing opinions and internet fights concerning the new look (there always are), but hey, at least it appears we'll be seeing some more hand drawn animation. I'm down with that (provided they manage to use one decent studio throughout, but that's a whole other can of worms.) All the way down. Ahem. Let's just move on.

Some of the basic premise also reminds me of Animated. Even though we have a seasoned Bumblebee in charge this time, he's set to lead an inexperienced team that has to learn to work together to overcome the Decepticons. If you were to summarize Animated's initial plot, it's fairly similar.

Plots that mirror those before them are common with the Transformers franchise of course, so I'm not trying to make a big deal or even complain. However, despite knowing it's best to judge any new iteration of a franchise on its own merit, it's always going to be hard not to compare it to previous installments. That goes double when particular story elements are highly reminiscent of those that came before. I really loved the Animated series, so I can imagine myself having a hard time not stacking the new Robots in Disguise cartoon against it upon airing. If it comes even close to matching the excellently balanced action to humor ratio and overall plot progression, I'll be quite a happy camper. For now, I'm just going to hope for the best.
