In one of my most recent battles with the Youtube vortex, I found myself watching a Mega Man X5 speed run. I owned all of the Playstation released Mega Man X titles, and I was certain I'd beaten them all. After admiring the pretty, glowing Tron-like backgrounds, it dawned on me that some of the bosses were completely unfamiliar as the game reached it's end. Despite knowing otherwise, it became clear I'd never actually gotten that far in the game.
I'm pretty sure I would have remembered battling Rangda Bangda from the original Mega Man X again, but seeing it turn up in X5 as Rangda Bangda W was completely new to me. Needless to say, this was pretty perplexing. I either managed to forget the last few parts of the game entirely, or convince myself that I'd beaten it despite never actually doing so. It's sad how delicate the mind can be at times.
It also brings up some troubling thoughts. What if there are other games I thought I'd beaten despite actually having abandoned at some point? Perhaps my frighteningly large "I'm going to play that eventually" list should extend even further than I realize! I hope this is just a fluke however. If I can find the time, maybe I'll delve further into the Youtube speed run vortex to make sure.
