10 G.I. Joe Figures To Display For Halloween

G.I. Joooooooooeeeeeeee

From the 1980s on, the G.I. Joe franchise has been built on a unique combination of military and sci-fi design sensibilities. Even so, plenty of Halloween-appropriate elements tend to slip through the cracks. In keeping with the spirit of the season, here are 10 of the spookiest G.I. Joe figures to ever hit the toy aisles.

Weekly Want - Premium Format Darkseid, Super Robot Wars, & More!

Darkseid is...expensive.

We may be in a bit of a pre-SDCC funk as far as huge reveals go, but "ooh" and "ah"-worthy product images are always trickling out here and there. The recurring theme of the week seemed to be official shots of previously-teased items, but there were still a few surprises in store. Now, on to my personal highlights!

Marvel Legends Infinite Series Avengers 5-Pack (Price & Release Date TBD)

These might be made from existing molds, but the vibrant decos have really won me over. It doesn't hurt that I'm a bit of a sucker for "gift set" releases in general. Unfortunately for many of us, this appears to be a European Disney Store exclusive.

Weekly Want - Marvel NOW! ARTFX, MOTU Classics, & More!

Racer Slim

Yeah, I know the question that's been on all of your minds. "When is it Weekly Want time again?!" Wait no longer, delectable denizens of Geek-Skull; the latest batch of action figure and collectible images is at hand!

10 Of The Best Comic Book Covers Of February 2015

Is it seriously the end of the month already? The calendar can't be argued, so we may as well get our retrospection over with before moving on to March. Here are 10 of Castle Geek-Skull's favorite comic book covers of February 2015!

Number Ones - G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes Agent Of Cobra #1 Review

...

While the larger than life Cobra Commander is likely the most well known G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero character, Snake Eyes isn't much further down the list. With nearly 100 different toy releases and a role in every iteration of the franchise, he's always been a central figure of its mythos. He escalated to leading status on "rule of cool" alone. This guy is a completely silent ninja commando with katanas, Uzis, and grenades strapped all over his pitch-black attire, and he just happens to have a pet wolf. Yeah, that sells.

Despite the inherent challenge in revolving traditionally speech bubble-driven stories around a character that never speaks, it only makes sense to capitalize on his popularity by giving him a comic book of his own. The original Marvel run was even retitled G.I. Joe: Starring SNAKE EYES at one point. The five-issue Snake Eyes: Agent of Cobra story isn't the first time IDW Publishing has slapped his name onto one of the titles, either. I imagine copies would sell on marquee value alone, but the added "heel turn" is sure to grab a bit more attention this time around. The question is, how does it hold up as the first of a series?

Weekly Want - Transformers Unite Warriors, Batman, & More!

"We won't stop fighting until you're finished, you hear?!"

Several of the items highlighted in this installment of Weekly Want left me with my arms flailing in the air like a hyperactive schoolchild. While they also deserve praise in standalone posts, leaving them out here just wouldn't be right. I'm going to shut up now and let the pictures speak for themselves!

14 Unexpected Surprises from TV, Movies, Games, etc. In 2014

Surprise, Mr. Falcon!

In my attempt to keep up with pop culture goings-on this year, there were a lot of developments I never could have predicted. It seems awesome television announcements or crazy character appearances were turning up all over the place. Take my silken hand as I lead you down the path of 14 of my favorite unexpected surprises from 2014!

Community's "G.I. Jeff" lovingly parodied the 1980s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon, complete with corresponding action figure commercials.

Community "G.I. Jeff" Mutineers Toy Package Mock Ups!

Community G.I. Jeff

The most recent episode of NBC's comedy series Community ("G.I. Jeff") was a wonderful pardoy/homage of Hasbro's G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon and toyline from the 1980s. While there were many jabs taken at the Joes (my favorite of which lampshaded the silliness of the COBRA twins Tomax & Xamot), the effort taken in working with Hasbro to make the episode a true tie-in of sorts created a tone that felt much closer to "loving" than "mocking."

Stolen Action Figures

Everyone with the slightest interest in toy collecting knows just how repetitive local shopping can be. In general, you're more likely to see the same stuff you've already been staring at for months with each visit to the likes of Toys R Us or major department stores. While this may leave some disappointed, a shelf-full of last season's stock doesn't bum me out nearly as much as the unfortunately regular sight of stolen action figures:

The Goofiest Action Figure Vehicles Ever!

It's not uncommon for toy collectors and "kid-at-heart" types to look back fondly on their action figure vehicles. From Technodromes to T.I.E. Fighters, the various pimped-out rides of our heroes and villains were often among the most coveted pieces of our collections. However, not every vehicle was worthy of such affection. In fact, some were downright nonsensical! Let's take a look at five of the goofiest vehicles (and vehicle assortments) ever:

Troop Building...IS IT MYTH?

When toy collectors buy up tons of the same generic "soldier" toy to amass an army, like say an A.I.M. Soldier, this is the fine art of troop building...or "army building." This is often an impressive sight. Wanting to marvel at the displays of toy addicts wealthy and patient enough to buy 500 storm troopers and line em up in pretty little cannon fodder rows, I did an image search for troop building. Much to my dramatically over-reacted disdain, all I got was shit like this:

Sigh. I suppose some of the images are perhaps vaguely related. You COULD troop build that Bayformer-y Insecticon from the first two results, but it's still only a picture of ONE. And a fucking dog? I love dogs, but what the hell? THAT IS NOT A PICTURE OF ONE THOUSAND COBRA TROOPERS.

I realize I should have simply changed my search to an even more specific term to get the "right" results, but man, troop building is a pretty common term for what I want. GIVE ME WHAT I WANT. ARGH. It's as if the fact that people make armies of little 4 inch dudes is trying to be covered up somehow. CONSPIRACY. I will fight this madness, and I will win.

Internet, I am disappoint. Disappoint so hard. I am faux-rage for the sake of blogging about *something*, to insane degrees never known before. Die.

Sgt. Slaughter rides again

Hasbro has revealed that one of their SDCC exclusives this year will be a new G.I. Joe version of Sgt. Slaughter! Excellent!

The inclusion of the WWF(E) personality in the Real American Hero G.I. Joe line feels like a really goofy gimmick in retrospect, but damnit, that was part of my childhood. I had the original toy, and you can be damn sure I'll do what I can to get my hands on this new one. Like most of their SDCC exclusives, I'm sure he'll show up on hasbrotoyshop.com after the con is over.

As you see above, Hasbro has produced two versions, much like they did with their Dictator Cobra Commander a while back. The second with the guns will surely be more limited, so gear up for a battle on that one, collectors.

Is it weird that this was kind of nerdgasm inducing?

Lady Jaye Photoshop Shocker!

If you know me, you know I love messing with Photoshop. This often leads to arrogant displays of "I can make it better!" attitude, the likes of which were recently seen on this very blog. Moving on...

Once upon a time when Hasbro's 25th Anniversary G.I. Joe line (celebrating the 80s Real American Hero iteration of G.I. Joe, naturally) was kicking off, there was plenty to geek out and be generally blissful about, but one particular figure just wasn't doing it for me, or most others really, and it was an important figure at that: Lady Jaye.

Yeesh. As you can see, this Lady Jaye's face sculpt depicts her as what I can only assume is the plainest of plain-Jane...grandmas. I have nothing against kind old wimmens that feed the pidgeons at the corner of the market as their granny-fros bop about ebulliently in the wind, but come on, sweet old nannies do not a Lady Jaye make. Lady Jaye should look strong, youthful, and throwing the fear of coming across as one of those freaks that faps it to toys aside: attractive.

The card art pretty much got it right:

Naturally, I decided to mess about with the actual toy in Photoshop to see what could be done to make it look more like the artwork above. Here are the results, in comparison to the original:

Do I prefer the altered version? Sure thing. Do I think Hasbro could've pulled it off? More than likely not, but I do think they could've gotten a hell of a lot closer than they did. She could have at least been a little more defined. As is, the details are just sort of vague. Sharpening up features such as the eyes, lips, and hair might've easily prevented the granny look. I know not all G.I. Joe females (or even males, these are mass-produced figures at a small scale, after all) are perfect, but even in the same line, the others certainly fared better. Just take a gander at Scarlett:

No, not entirely awe-inspiring, but still a far better effort than Geriatric Jaye.

There was a later remold of Lady Jaye based more on the original cartoon design that did pull off the appropriate look a bit better, but even so, it's not too amazing, and you had to buy a pack of several figures to get it anyway.

Maybe one day there will be a definitive Lady Jaye released that's actually up to my ridiculous standards for a figure under 4 inches, but until then, eh, I guess there's always the weirdly proportioned Spy Troops version...
