Even Without Edgar Wright, Ant-Man Might Be Worth Supporting

Ant-Man #47 cover
Ant-Man #47

The internet has been abuzz this evening over Edgar Wright's decision to step down from directing the upcoming live action Ant-Man. Wright (most famous for directing Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End) cited "creative differences" as the inspiration for his departure. I'm a massive fan of his work and he has made nothing but a great impression on me throughout his numerous commentaries, interviews, and other press appearances. When I heard he would be at the helm of Ant-Man, I was absolutely stoked. As you might expect, I was not alone.

I Actually Miss Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Slap Happy Individuals Excitedly Learning Dance.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. got a fairly slow start that left a lot of people cold. The initial reactions were positive to mixed, with a bit more "meh" as the pilot's followup episodes rolled on. After such a warm reaction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that preceded it, the show had a lot to live up to. However, it's a bit of a "backup story" by nature. It was never going to have the juiciest of juicy fan-pleasing Marvel spectacles, but some viewers might have expected a bit more. I've seen it put it this way: the show we got is less "marvel at Marvel" and more "NCIS: Marvel." I suppose it's understandable if people were a bit let down.

Weekly Want May 12-19 feat. Batman, Godzilla, TMNT, & More!

Batman Animated Series Joker DC Collectibles
If you've kept up with my recent posts, this should come as no surprise.

I was apparently too busy to get a "Weekly Want" post up last week, but I featured the likes of Captain America Figmas and LEGO Ghostbusters the week prior. What madness lies ahead this week? Stay tuned, lovely readers:

Even the "Worst" Action Figures Still Have Merit!

ToyBiz Spider Man action figure
Web-Suction Hands!

This is Marvel Superheroes Spider-Man, the first in a long line of 1990s Spidey action figure releases from Toy Biz. It hasn't aged well, and it honestly might have been a bit lackluster even at the time of its release. After all, the most significant advancement over the Secret Wars Spidey from six years prior was articulated knees. Big whoop, right? Regardless, when I received this figure on Christmas morning of 1990, I was absolutely awe-struck. I only vaguely remember the exact moment, but I know it was a pretty big deal.

Stay Puft LEGO set
Speak not and partake of my cash!

A new month is upon us and another week has past. Let's celebrate with another edition of the "Weekly Want," wherein several of the best promo shots for toys and collectibles are compiled for your viewing pleasure. Last week's edition showcased Masterpiece Ultra Magnus, Revoltech Mini Solid Snake, Marvel Mini-Mates, and more. Let's move on to what caught my eye between April 28th and May the 5th:

Spider-Man FanArt Frenzy

Spider-Man Fan Art
Look out, here comes the Spider-Man!

Ohhhh snip snap, it's time for another edition of FanArt Frenzy! In case you didn't hear, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was unsurprisingly the top earning movie in North America on its opening weekend. Ever the opportunist, I figured now was as good a time as any to feature some fanart of the old webhead. While I mentioned being glad to showcase a character from DC Comics last week with Cyborg, I'm more than happy to make Spider-Man my third Marvel feature after Captain America and Moon Knight. Enough babble, let's go ahead and thwip our way into some Spidey art:

15 Random Pictures From My First Free Comic Book Day

Star Wars Tusken Raider Cosplay
I see Sand People.

As previously mentioned, I somehow managed to miss every Free Comic Book Day up until now. I am happy to report that the curse has been lifted! With the promise of Tusken Raider cosplay fresh in mind, I made the effort to venture to my nearest comic shop today and I had a grand time overall. Here are 15 random pictures that loosely illustrate my adventure:

Weekly Want Apr 21-28 with Masterpiece Ultra Magnus & More!

Ultra Magnus Masterpiece Transformers
Shut up and take my money!

It is time once more for the "Weekly Want" action figure and collectible promo shot compilation! In the April 14-21 Weekly Want I covered everything from Arkham City statues to an awesome Hot Toys Spider-Man. Of course, there were plenty of "want" inducing goodies shown off this week as well, so let's check 'em out:

Theater Lobby Displays: The Object of my Wide-Eyed, Geeky Desire

Grimlock Age of Extinction Lobby Standee
Grimlock from Transformers: Age of Extinction

I just came across this Transformers: Age of Extinction Grimlock lobby display courtesy of dj_67knights, and my mind flooded with all of the other awesome giant-size promotional materials I've come across in theaters over the years. I've never thought to photograph them myself, but I was at least able to scour the internets for examples. Onward:

Weekly Want April 7-14 with Play Arts Kai Watchmen, ARTFX+ Star Wars, & More!

New feature time! This is the "Weekly Want," showing a small compilation of cool action figures and other geeky goods that had new promotional shots released over the past week. Here are a few of the rad items that caught my eye between April 7th and 14th:

Moon Knight FanArt Frenzy!

Look out, it's FanArt Frenzy time once again! Last week's installment focused solely on Captain America illustrations to celebrate the new Cap movie's release. This time around we're taking it to a slightly darker corner of the Marvel universe: Moon Knight!

5 Geeky Cereals I Wish I Could Really Buy!

So, I regularly peruse pop-culture t-shirt sites like Teefury. Day in and day out, they feature incredibly awesome and eye-catching designs that homage properties or characters that I more than likely have interest in. The results are most often in the realm of "Whoa, that's cool!"

Lately, some of my favorite designs have been of fictional cereals that immediately call some of the more famous Kellog's brands to mind. I'm pop-culture obsessed enough to love cereal mascots and box art, so thrusting characters from other mediums like freakin' Iron Man into that format is totally up my alley. Here are five notable examples:

Captain America FanArt Frenzy!

This week's FanArt Frenzy will break from the established format a bit to focus only on Captain America drawings! No need for flowery introductions, let's get right to it!

My "Like" Affair with Captain America

I like Captain America. LIKE. He may not be my favorite character, but he's always been a part of my life in some form or another. He even made his way into several of my earliest childhood drawings:

Even so, as time went on it seems I often pushed good 'ol Cap aside in favor of other characters. For shame.

Tuesday

Stolen Action Figures

Everyone with the slightest interest in toy collecting knows just how repetitive local shopping can be. In general, you're more likely to see the same stuff you've already been staring at for months with each visit to the likes of Toys R Us or major department stores. While this may leave some disappointed, a shelf-full of last season's stock doesn't bum me out nearly as much as the unfortunately regular sight of stolen action figures:

Sometimes It's Good to Be "Bad" at Video Games

Punch Out!! knock out

We all know the rush of mastering our favorite video games. Whether it's leveling our RPG characters so much that the bosses feel puny in comparison, crushing speed-run records, or learning Mega Man patterns enough to beat the game without being hit, there are a myriad of ways in which games offer us the reward of overcoming obstacles.

However, the road to these achievements can be quite grueling sometimes. If you fixate on a particularly hard-to-reach goal long enough, the act of playing games to get away from your real-life frustrations might leave you with your blood boiling. "Casual gamers" that only play games here or there are regularly scoffed at by the more devout gaming crowd, but maybe they're on to something.

Maybe sometimes it's good to be "bad."

New Avengers Promo Art Released - Loki & More

Click to view images in full size!

As seen above, new Avengers movie promo art has been released. Thanks to SpiderMedia.ru for the original posting. The new image of Loki is wonderful, and it's always nice to see more of the full Avengers team assembled. Like the original team promo art first seen at the Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas in June 2011, you'll likely catch images like these used on various forms of merchandise in the coming year, such as action figures, video games, candy wrappers, soda cans, and so on.

Filming of Marvel's The Avengers is nearly complete, and it's set for release on May 4, 2011. Keep your eyes peeled for many more updates to come!

PS: If you missed it the first time, the promo image from SDCC 2011's Marvel Booth is absolutely amazing. Check it out HERE.
